Excerpt from New Historical Fiction Romance - 'Rebecca's Reveries'
by Marnie Pehrson

The following is an excerpt from Chapter 5 of Marnie Pehrson's new historical fiction romance, Rebecca's Reveries. The time period is 1881.

Brief Book Summary:
Rebecca Marchant had led a sheltered life until she found herself inexplicably drawn to the home of her father's youth. Surrounded by the historical landscape of the Chickamauga Battlefield in Georgia, Rebecca finds herself plagued by haunting dreams and vivid visions of Civil War events. As Rebecca walks a mile in another girl's moccasins through her visions and dreams she learns about compassion, forgiveness, temptation and the power of true love.

Excerpt:
The next morning dawned bright and clear and having experienced a restful slumber void of disturbing dreams, Rebecca awoke rejuvenated. She rushed to the window to look out. A relieved smile spread across her face as she saw Mitch entering the stable, mud clinging to the bottom of his boots from the saturating rains. Quickly, she dressed and descended the stairs.

Determining that she still had some time before breakfast, she slipped out the back door and made her way to the stable, the wet grass clinging to her shoes. She breathed deeply of the aroma of wet hay and fresh clean air.

Mitch seemed entrenched in thought as he stooped over, repairing a brown mare's shoe. So engrossed in his task was he, that he didn't notice Rebecca's approach. She leaned her elbows against the stall and watched him work, his strong arms flexing as he held the horse's hoof in one hand and hammered the shoe in place with the other. He didn't notice her for several minutes and without thinking she found herself mesmerized by his muscular arms and his clenched jaw as he concentrated on his task.

Suddenly he looked up, "Oh," he jumped a little, "Didn't your parents ever teach you that it's impolite to sneak up on somebody?" he snapped in irritation, his brow wrinkling with disturbance.

"I -- I 'm sorry," she began to back away. "I didn't mean to disturb you," she apologized, thoroughly embarrassed and turning to leave.

He quickly slipped out of the stall and caught her by the arm, "Wait."

With the warmth of his strong hand firmly encircling her arm, Rebecca's heart raced with exhilaration akin to what she'd experienced in her dream of that fateful morning in the stable, and it frightened her. Quickly she pulled her arm from his hand.

"And your parents should've taught you that it's rude to grab a woman in such a rough manner!" she retorted as she walked briskly back toward the house.

Mitch stood there hesitating, watching her go until suddenly determination registered in his jaw and he jogged after her, grabbed both of her shoulders from behind and turned her around to face him.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you. You just startled me's all."

"Well, I'm sorry. It won't happen again," she spat. There was that adrenaline rush again and all Rebecca wanted to do was run -- to be free of his intoxicating presence. She wiggled, trying to free herself from his grasp, but he still held her securely by her shoulders. "Let me go, Mitch," she pleaded.

"What's goin' on? Why are you actin' like this?" he searched her eyes with his. She looked like a scared deer ready to bolt.

"Me? You're the one who got all bent out of shape just 'cause I didn't announce myself the minute I entered the stable -- just because I didn't want to disturb your work!"

His voice softened and his chiseled features began to relax, "I'm sorry, Miss Marchant. I shouldn't have snapped at you. I didn't mean to frighten you."

"You didn't frighten me, Mr. Garrison," the defensiveness began to rise again in her eyes. "I simply am not accustomed to men snapping at me or handling me so roughly." She looked to her shoulders which were still covered by his calloused bronze hands.

Before she could lift her gaze from her shoulders, his right hand held her chin securely directing her gaze upward into his eyes, she could feel his warm breath on her lips and her knees began to buckle. Expecting that his lips would meet hers at any instant, so close were they that she could feel the warmth emanating from them, she closed her eyes.

"Maybe you're not frightened of me, Rebecca. Maybe you're frightened of yourself when you're with me." Suddenly he released his grip on her chin and shoulder, turned and stomped back to the stable. "When you're ready to be honest with me, you know where to find me," he called back over his shoulder and disappeared into the stable.

Rebecca clenched her fists in irritation and groaned, "The gall!" She spun around and stomped into the house.
